Romania
American football is relatively new in Romania and in the absence of a national federation is governed by club team the Bucharest Warriors.
The first signs of interest in the game appeared in late 2006 and early 2007. The game’s birth in Romania can be dated exactly to February 18, 2007, when 19-year-old Rizu Cristian convinced a group of people who had communicated on an American football internet forum to gather in a park to play some ball. Weekend after weekend they gathered in the park and in the spring began holding organized practices. In the summer of 2007 the group named themselves the Bucharest Warriors and held organized practices. In September 2007, the Warriors received their first equipment and started full contact practices.
Elsewhere in Romania, the Constanta Sharks team was developing, having purchased equipment about two months before the Warriors. Also, in other parts of the country, other teams began playing: Oradea Stars, Iasi Se7ens, Cluj-Napoca Crimson Dragons, Vaslui Wolves.
On December 2, 2007, Bucharest Warriors and Constanta Sharks played their first scrimmage together and in the Spring of 2008, Bucharest Warriors played against the Chishinev Barbarians from Moldova in a two-game home and away series. In July and August 2008, Bucharest Warriors faced Constanta Sharks, home and away then in March 2007, the Warriors participated at the Essone Flag Football event in France, representing Romania. In September 2008, the Warriors continued its progress and faced the Minsk Zubrs from Belarus.
Key figures in American Football in Romania include:
Kisfaludy Claudius - Warriors Head Coach
Cojanu Florin – Offensive coach who helped put theories, training drills, strategies into practice.
Kisfaludy Claudius – brought knowledge of the game’s rules and drills to Romania and also contributed financially.
Seremet Roman – Warriors President who experienced American football in high school while living in the US, which enabled him to implement strategies and practices. Played for the Kishinev Barbarians in Moldova.
