Finland were crowned IFAF Europe Women’s Champions last night after a comprehensive victory over Great Britain in Granada, Spain.
Whilst the 50-12 scoreline highlights the strength of the Finnish team, it does not tell the whole story of an enthralling encounter which was anyone’s game up until half time.
Indeed, it was Great Britain that opened the scoring with a successful 18 yard Field Goal attempt from Jayne Goodliffe. The Great Britain lead was short-lived however, as a Jenni Wahlberg
Touchdown swung the score in Finland’s direction to see them lead 6-3.
A succession of scores saw the game neatly poised at 20-9 in Finland’s favour at Half Time. Paula Lehtinen and Wahlberg again, hit the endzone either side of a Touchdown from Great Britain’s Quarterback Jo Kilby.
Early in the Third Quarter another Field Goal from Goodliffe saw Great Britain come within striking distance of Finland but it seemed to only spur on the Finnish ladies.
Two Touchdowns from Jenni Linden, another from Wahlberg and one from Tytti Kuusinen added to with extra points from Katri Laine, Linden and Janina Vertanen saw Finland race away to secure the title.
